Puoliaika, Turku City Theatre 6.3.2025

A long time coming transformation and a mathematical act of puppetry magic (without any puppetlike puppets).

It is almost time. Tomorrow sometime after 19:00 local time our good friend Ishmael Falke will become mathematically Finnish. Turku City Theatre will host the most spectacular ceremony, metamorphosis and an act of real mathematical magic.

We have been building this show for a little over a year now, slowly and little by little until just at the beginning of this week everything exploded into an intense flurry of rehearsing and building. All the time until the start of the show, and start of the countdown, will be well calculated. It’s going to be a life-changing show, especially for Ishmael. Maybe also for someone in the audience. Maybe also for us behind the desks, scripts, cameras, screens and microphones. But definitely for Ishmael.

Having lived a short immigrant-lite existence myself, it’s very impressive to me how people change place, reroot themselves, build homes and communities and ways of living that are so entangled with so many places, people and communities. As such, it has been a lot of fun and most of all an honor to compose and sound-design this piece, full of advanced sound-design, heavy Sibelius-nodding as well as determinate unabashed and tasty kitsch.

You can find out more about the show in Finnish on the pages of Grus Grus Teatteri or Turku City Theatre.

Mathematics don’t lie. Ishmael tricks us only sometimes. Tomorrow will be good.
